The Leisure Pursuits of Larry JamesLife. . . Love. . . and the pursuit of great jazz concerts! You see. . . I "do" have a life beyond my work as a professional speaker and relationships author. Thought you might like to take a peek at it. I love jazz. It's my passion in music. When I am in my office, I listen to KYOT Smooth Jazz here in the Phoenix area. I enjoy attending jazz concerts, especially the outdoor concerts. Some of our favorites are Dave Koz, Kenny G, Tom Scott, Fourplay, and the Rippingtons to name only a few. I also love the big band jazz sound.
Jazz inspires me. To me it is the most creative music there is. Every word in the three relationship books I have
written have been written with the sound of jazz in the background. I have an appreciation for other types of music, however
jazz is my favorite. In April, 1998 the idea of building a water garden in the back yard came up. A water garden to help beautify the back yard would look terrific. I took some time to read up on water garden construction and soon got the feeling that I may be getting in over my head; if not literally. My friend, Sandy and I joined the Greater Phoenix Pond Society and have met some terrific people that have been extremely helpful. Having never ever done any project this big, I worked on it in my spare time, however nearly two years later I had one of the
most beautiful water gardens in the Scottsdale area, even if I do say so. It is truly one of my life's greatest accomplishments
in terms of leisure pursuits, although it didn't feel like it until the project was complete.
With the exception of some consulting with Jim Ehmann, owner of Paradise Ponds in Phoenix, and Janet Kennedy, his assistant; help with the pond liner from my cousin, Doug Wagoner, and help pouring a mortar foundation for the flagstone by my friends Dan Donohue and Jeff Schweikart, I'm proud to say I did all the work myself. Wheew!! What a project. This was certainly a stretch for me to start from scratch and build something that required such percision with regard to laying the flagstone around the water garden, the waterfall and the tiny pond at the top of the stream. Never did anything like that before.
If you would like to learn about water gardening, join the
Greater Phoenix Pond Society or a water garden or pond
group in your hometown. The Phoenix group is a terrific group of water garden and pond enthusiasts.
